The Lightning's Game

Max loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd grab his lucky glove—the one with the rainbow stitching his grandmother gave him—and head to the dusty field behind his house. But today, the sky turned purple and strange as storm clouds gathered like sleeping giants.

"Just one more pitch," Max whispered, winding up to throw against the old wooden backstop.

CRACK! His baseball hit the wood, but instead of bouncing back, it shot into the air as a bolt of lightning streaked down from the sky. The ball blazed with golden light, spinning upward until it landed softly in center field.

Max ran toward it, his heart pounding. Where the ball had fallen, the grass had transformed into sand—and from the earth rose a magnificent sphinx with emerald eyes and wings like sunset clouds.

"You called me with your throw," the sphinx spoke, her voice like wind chimes. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Lightning Field. For years, children have played here, but none ever threw with such pure joy."

Max's mouth opened wide. "You're... real?"

Cleo smiled. "Wonder is the most real magic of all. Would you like to play?"

They played the most wonderful game of baseball ever. When Cleo hit the ball, it trailed sparkles through the air. When Max ran bases, he felt lighter than air. They laughed until the storm clouds broke apart, revealing a rainbow.

"I have to go now," Cleo said as the rainbow faded. "But remember, Max: the magic wasn't in me or the lightning. It was in your joy—the love in your heart for what you do. That's the real lightning."

She disappeared in a shower of golden sparks, leaving behind a single baseball that glowed faintly whenever Max held it.

From that day on, Max played every game with a full heart, knowing that the real magic wasn't in winning or even in mythical creatures. It was in the love he brought to everything he did—and that, he learned, was the greatest wonder of all.
