The Lightning River Cat
Max was afraid of two things: deep water and thunderstorms. So when the biggest storm of the summer hit, he hid under his blanket, counting the seconds between flashes.
Then something strange happened. A cat appeared at his window—not just any cat, but one with fur that sparked and shimmered like a tiny galaxy. Its eyes glowed golden, and when lightning flashed outside, the cat's paws briefly turned to light.
"Are you scared too?" Max whispered.
The cat nudged his hand, and suddenly Max wasn't afraid anymore. He felt brave, like he could do anything. He opened the window, and the cat leaped onto the sidewalk.
"Come!" the cat seemed to say, though Max couldn't explain how he understood.
They were running through the storm, Max splashing through puddles that felt like magic potions. Rain washed away his fear, leaving only excitement.
But then Max saw it—flood waters rising, trapping a litter of kittens beneath a fallen crate. The water was too deep, and the current too strong.
The lightning cat looked at Max, then at the flood. Its eyes blazed brighter than any storm. Without thinking, Max stepped onto the water—and his feet didn't sink. Lightning flashed again, and suddenly he could run across the surface as if it were solid ground.
He rescued every kitten, passing them to safety. The lightning cat herded them toward dry ground, its fur creating a warm glow that cut through the darkness.
When the storm passed, Max discovered the truth: the lightning cat had been watching him for years, waiting for him to be brave enough to face his fears. The storm wasn't something to hide from—it was where magic lived.
"You're my best friend," Max told the cat, whose fur still sparkled even in sunshine.
From that day on, Max never feared storms or water again. Because he knew that somewhere between lightning drops and river runs, courage was waiting to be found.
And sometimes, the most ordinary things—like a rainy day or a friendly cat—hold the most extraordinary magic.
