The Lightning Pyramid's Secret
Maya loved spying. With her magnifying glass and notebook, she was the best detective in the neighborhood. Her partner was Barnaby, a scruffy golden dog with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down.
One stormy afternoon, while spying on the garden shed, something strange happened. Lightning flashed — ZAP! — and where the old oak tree had stood, a miniature pyramid now glowed with purple light.
Maya gasped. Barnaby barked, his tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled.
The pyramid was only as tall as Maya's knee, made of crystal that hummed with energy. Strange symbols pulsed along its sides like tiny stars.
"I'm going to investigate," Maya whispered, adjusting her invisible spy hat. Barnaby nudged her hand, as if saying, "I'm with you, friend."
They approached the pyramid together. Another flash of lightning cracked overhead. The pyramid's top opened like a flower blooming in fast motion.
Inside sat a small creature — no bigger than Maya's thumb — with silver skin and eyes like raindrops.
"A friend!" it squeaked. "Finally, someone found me!"
Maya knelt down. "Who are you?"
"I'm Zephyr, keeper of the Storm Pyramid," the creature said. "I've been trapped for three hundred years. The lightning broke the seal!"
"But what's a pyramid doing in my garden?" Maya asked.
Zephyr smiled. "Magic pyramids travel where they're needed most. They appear to kind hearts during storms."
Barnaby licked Zephyr's tiny hand. The creature giggled.
"The pyramid chooses guardians," Zephyr explained. "You and your dog freed me. Now I can return home to the Cloud Kingdom."
Maya felt sad. "But we just met you!"
"True friends never really say goodbye," Zephyr said wisely. "Watch the lightning from now on. When it flashes purple, that's me waving to you."
The pyramid began to spin. Zephyr blew Maya a kiss. With one last lightning flash — PURPLE this time — both pyramid and creature shot into the sky like a shooting star.
Barnaby barked at the clouds, his one floppy ear bouncing.
Maya hugged her dog. "We're not just spies anymore, Barnaby. We're guardians of magic."
And every storm after that, when purple lightning streaked across the sky, Maya and Barnaby would wave back, knowing their friend was safe in the Cloud Kingdom, watching over them.
