The Lightning Pyramid Mystery
Lily and Max were best friends who loved going on adventures in their backyard. One summer afternoon, they were running through the tall grass, playing their favorite game: Secret Spy. They wore disguises — sunglasses from the dollar store and capes made from old bedsheets.
"Agent Max, look!" Agent Lily whispered dramatically. She pointed to the sandbox, where something strange was glowing.
The children crept closer, spy-walking as quietly as cats. In the middle of the sandbox stood a tiny pyramid made of glowing golden blocks. It shimmered like it had its own sunlight, even though the real sun was setting behind the trees.
Suddenly, the pyramid crackled with mini lightning bolts that zapped and popped like the Fourth of July sparklers Lily's dad bought. But these sparks were warm and friendly, not scary at all.
"What do we do?" Max asked, eyes wide.
Just then, their neighbor Tommy shuffled slowly around the corner of the house. He moved so slowly, dragging one foot behind him, arms stretched out stiff in front.
"Br-r-r-ains," Tommy joked in a funny deep voice. "I'm a sand zombie!"
Lily and Max giggled. Tommy always made up silly games. But then Tommy's eyes went round like dinner plates when he saw the glowing pyramid.
"Whoa," Tommy breathed, forgetting his zombie act completely. "Is that real magic?"
The three friends knelt around the tiny pyramid. As they watched, the mini lightning began arranging the golden blocks into letters, one by one: B-E F-R-I-E-N-D-S.
"Be friends!" Lily read aloud. "The pyramid wants us to be friends!"
"But we're already friends," Max said, confused.
Tommy looked at his shoes. "Sometimes I play by myself because I think you two are too busy for me. So I pretend to be a zombie, because zombies don't have feelings."
Lily reached out and took Tommy's hand. Max grabbed his other hand. Together, they all touched the pyramid.
The golden blocks burst into a thousand tiny butterflies that fluttered up toward the first stars appearing in the purple sky. The children laughed with delight as the butterflies swirled around them, each one glowing like a tiny moon.
"That was the best magic ever," Tommy said, and for the first time, he didn't shuffle or pretend. He just smiled.
From that day on, Agent Lily, Agent Max, and Agent Zombie went on adventures together. And whenever they made a sand pyramid in the sandbox, they always made sure to invite everyone to play, because the best magic is the magic of friendship.
