The Lightning Pyramid

Young Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his worn glove and throw his favorite baseball against the old oak tree until the sun went down. One stormy afternoon, just as Leo wound up for his best pitch, a brilliant bolt of lightning struck his baseball! But instead of burning up, the ball began to glow with a soft, golden light. It hovered in the air, then zoomed off toward the forest. "Wait!" Leo called, chasing after it. He followed the glowing baseball through twisted trees until he found a thick silver cable stretching from the ground all the way up into the clouds. A girl about Leo's age sat at the base of the cable, examining it through thick glasses. "I've been waiting for someone to find this," she said, smiling. "I'm Maya. This cable appeared right after that weird lightning storm started. Want to see where it goes?" Leo nodded. Together, they climbed the cable, hand over hand, higher and higher until they broke through the clouds. There, floating in the sky like a dream, stood a magnificent pyramid made entirely of crystal. Inside the pyramid, shadows danced on the walls. "The lightning trapped my shadow," whispered a voice. "Only friends who work together can set it free." Maya looked at Leo. "Your baseball started glowing when the lightning hit it. Maybe that's the key!" Leo placed his glowing baseball on a crystal pedestal in the center of the room. The pyramid filled with light. Shadows spun around them, then suddenly formed into hundreds of shadow children, laughing and playing. "Thank you!" they cheered. "The lightning forgot that friendship is the strongest magic of all." As Leo and Maya slid back down the cable, they knew they'd found something better than any game-winning hit—a forever friend and the memory that working together makes even the impossible possible.
