The Lightning Pool Secret

Mia loved thunderstorms. While other children hid under blankets, she pressed her nose against the glass, watching the sky light up.

One rainy evening, lightning flashed so bright it turned the backyard purple. In that moment, Mia saw something glowing near the old garden pool. She grabbed her yellow raincoat and raced outside.

The pool—usually murky and still—was shimmering like a captured piece of sky. And there, swimming in excited circles, was the most beautiful goldfish Mia had ever seen. Its scales sparkled in every color of the rainbow.

"Hello!" Mia whispered, kneeling beside the water.

The goldfish surfaced and spoke in a voice like tiny bells. "Thank goodness you're here! I've been stuck for hours."

"Stuck?" Mia asked.

"I'm actually a starfish from the sky," the goldfish explained. "A bolt of lightning knocked me right out of the constellation! I got tangled in this old cable when I fell. Can you help?"

Mia peered into the water and saw a rusty cable snaring the goldfish's fin. Carefully, she reached in and untangled the metal wire. The goldfish did a happy flip.

"You saved me!" it cheered. "Now I can grant you one wish."

Mia thought hard. She had always been embarrassed by her crazy hair—it puffed out in every direction, never staying smooth like the other kids'.

"I wish..." Mia started, then paused. The goldfish looked at her with kind eyes. "You know what? I don't need to change. My hair makes me ME—wild and stormy, just like tonight!"

The goldfish grinned. "That's the wisest wish I've ever heard. Your hair is magical, Mia. It shows how big your imagination is!"

With a final splash of rainbow light, the goldfish leaped into the sky as a shooting star.

Mia ran inside, water dripping from her wild hair. She didn't care anymore. She was perfect just as she was—a storm of wonderful, impossible magic.

And every time lightning struck, she swore she could hear tiny bells ringing from the sky.
