The Lightning Pool Secret

Maya loved rainy days. When the sky turned dark and thunder rumbled like a giant tummy, she would press her nose against the window and watch the water dance in the backyard pool.

One afternoon, the strangest thing happened. Lightning flashed — CRACK! — and struck right beside the pool! Maya rushed outside in her yellow rainboots, ready to see what happened.

What she found made her gasp.

A tiny girl, no bigger than Maya's hand, sat on the edge of the pool, dripping wet. She had wings that sparkled like diamonds, even in the gray rain.

"Are you... a fairy?" Maya whispered.

"I'm Penny!" the tiny girl said, shaking water from her wings. "I was playing in the clouds when that nasty lightning knocked me right out of the sky!"

Maya reached out her hand, palm up. "Want somewhere dry to sit?"

Penny hopped onto Maya's palm and smiled. "You're my first real friend! I've always wanted to spy on humans from up there — I mean, watch you! — but fairies aren't supposed to come down here."

"Why not?" Maya asked.

"They think humans don't believe in magic anymore," Penny said sadly. "But you do. I can tell."

Maya carried Penny to the old palm tree where she had built a fairy house last summer. She showed Penny the tiny rooms made of acorn caps and flower petals.

"This is wonderful!" Penny squealed. "I'll bring my whole family! We'll dance in your garden and make the flowers bloom extra bright!"

"But you have to promise one thing," Maya said seriously.

"Anything!"

"Don't spy on me anymore," Maya giggled. "Just knock on my window. Friends don't hide."

Penny wrapped her tiny arms around Maya's finger. "Friends don't hide. I promise."

And that's how Maya learned that the best magic isn't found in lightning bolts or fairy dust — it's found in something even more powerful: friendship. And every stormy day after that, Maya would look out her window, and there would be Penny, knocking on the glass, ready for another adventure.
