The Lightning Pool's Secret Friend

Lily and Max loved exploring their grandmother's backyard, especially on rainy summer nights. The old swimming pool sat empty most of the year, but when lightning flashed across the sky, something magical happened.

"Look!" Lily pointed during one storm. "The pool is glowing!"

Blue light rippled across the water like liquid stars. Then a hand reached up from the depths—not a scary hand, but a pale, green hand waving hello.

A boy pulled himself out of the water. He looked strange, with pale skin and clothes that shimmered like fish scales. "Hello," he said slowly. "I've been sleeping at the bottom of the pool for one hundred years. Lightning always wakes me up."

"Are you a... zombie?" Max asked, eyes wide.

"I don't know what that is," the boy said. "I'm just lonely."

The children learned his name was Finn, and he'd been cursed by a wizard long ago to sleep in the pool until lightning struck and someone kind found him. He wasn't scary at all—he just wanted to play.

"We play padel!" Lily said, dragging an old racket from the shed. "It's like tennis, but more fun!"

Finn's eyes lit up. He had never played games before. The three of them hit a ball back and forth across the yard, laughing as lightning flashed above them. Finn moved awkwardly at first, his stiff joints cracking like dry twigs, but soon he was running and jumping like any regular kid.

"I never knew magic could feel like this," Finn said, grinning. "I thought I was supposed to be scary and alone. But really, I just needed friends."

The lightning storm passed, and Finn's curse began to lift. His pale skin turned rosy, and his green clothes turned bright and colorful.

"Thank you for showing me that fun and friendship are the strongest magic of all," Finn said, hugging them both. "I'll come back every storm to play padel with my best friends."

Lily and Max waved as Finn disappeared into the night, leaving behind only the sound of laughter and the magic of new friendship made during a lightning storm at their special pool.
