The Lightning Pool's Secret Friend
Lily loved storms. When thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy, she would press her nose against the window and watch the sky dance with brilliant lightning bolts.
One rainy afternoon, her fluffy orange cat Whiskers darted out the back door. "Whiskers! Come back!" Lily called, grabbing her yellow raincoat and chasing after him into the garden.
She found Whiskers beside a pool she had never seen before. It shimmered with strange blue light, even though the sky was dark. The water looked like liquid stars.
Suddenly, a strange figure emerged from the pool. It was green and dripping wet, moving slowly and stiffly. Whiskers hissed and puffed up like a marshmallow.
"Don't be scared!" the figure said in a bubbly voice. "I'm not a zombie like everyone thinks. I'm Zara, the pool's guardian!"
Lily stepped closer. "A zombie? But you seem... nice."
"That's because nobody stays to talk," Zara said sadly. "They see me walking funny because the water makes me heavy, and they run away. But I've been guarding this magical pool for three hundred years!"
Lightning flashed overhead, and Zara's green skin glowed. "During storms, the pool gives magic water that can heal any hurt. But I'm so lonely guarding it alone."
Lily's heart felt like a warm cookie. "You don't have to be alone anymore. Whiskers and I will visit you!"
Whiskers, sensing Zara's kindness, stopped hissing and rubbed against her wet leg, purring loudly.
Zara's eyes widened. "He likes me!"
"Of course," Lily said. "Friends come in all shapes, sizes, and colors—even green and wet ones."
From that day on, whenever lightning streaked across the sky, Lily and Whiskers would visit their friend Zara. They learned that the scariest things sometimes just need a little kindness to show their true colors.
And the magical pool's water? It helped heal Lily's scraped knee, Whiskers's hurt paw, and even Zara's lonely heart.
Because the real magic wasn't in the water at all. It was in friendship.
