The Lightning Pool's Secret
Lily loved summer evenings at her grandmother's house. The best part was the old swimming pool in the backyard, where she'd swim until the stars came out. But tonight, something magical was about to happen.
As Lily floated on her back, watching storm clouds gather, she noticed something strange. A single goldfish darted beneath her – bright orange with shimmering scales that seemed to glow.
"You shouldn't be in here," she whispered, reaching toward it. But the goldfish didn't swim away. Instead, it spoke in a voice like tiny bells.
"I'm Goldie, and I've been waiting for you, Lily."
Lily gasped. A talking goldfish! Before she could say anything, a brilliant flash of lightning split the sky. CRACK! Thunder shook the ground. Her iPhone slipped from her hand and plopped into the water.
"No!" Lily cried, reaching for it. But Goldie swam circles around the sinking phone.
"Don't worry!" the goldfish sang.
Suddenly, the pool began to glow. Every drop of water sparkled like diamonds. The goldfish grew larger, its scales turning into streams of light that wrapped around Lily's phone. The device floated up, completely dry.
"Your phone carries stories from your world," Goldie explained. "And I carry magic from mine. When lightning strikes water, our worlds meet for one minute."
The pool transformed. Lily wasn't in her grandmother's backyard anymore – she was floating in an ocean of stars. Goldfish of every color swam around her like living rainbows. Each one carried a tiny glowing orb.
"These are forgotten wishes," Goldie said. "Children make wishes and forget them. We keep them safe."
Lily thought of her wish – to find a friend who loved adventures as much as she did.
"I remember that one," Goldie giggled. A golden orb floated toward her and burst into sparkles that settled in her palm, forming a tiny goldfish charm.
"Now you'll always have magic with you," Goldie said. "And whenever it rains, look in any puddle or pool. We're still there, waiting."
The lightning flashed again, and Lily was back in the swimming pool. The storm had passed. Her grandmother called from the porch, "Sweetie, come inside! The rain's starting!"
Lily smiled, clutching the goldfish charm. Some secrets were worth keeping – especially the magical ones found in unexpected places, especially when lightning strikes and you least expect it.
