The Lightning Pool's Secret

Emma loved swimming more than anything. Every summer day, she'd splash in her backyard pool until her fingers wrinkled like raisins. But Emma had a secret fear—she was terrified of thunderstorms.

One hot afternoon, dark clouds gathered overhead. Emma rushed inside as thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. From her window, she watched something impossible happen. A bolt of lightning struck the swimming pool, but instead of fizzling out, the water began to glow a brilliant orange.

Emma's curiosity fought her fear. She crept outside and peeked over the pool's edge.

"Hello!" called a tiny voice.

An orange fish with shimmering scales was swimming in the glowing water. "I'm Finn! The lightning woke me from my nap."

"You can talk?" Emma gasped.

"Only during lightning storms," Finn explained. "I'm a storm-fish. Usually I sleep deep underground, but lightning calls me up for a visit."

Emma watched another lightning bolt flash across the sky. Instead of scary, the storm seemed beautiful through Finn's eyes.

"Would you like to see something magical?" Finn asked. "Jump in! The lightning-water lets you swim like a fish."

Emma hesitated, then remembered how much she loved swimming. She took a breath and jumped.

Instantly, she could breathe underwater! She and Finn raced around the pool as orange sparkles trailed behind them. They played tag with the lightning bolts dancing above.

"You're braver than you think," Finn said as the storm passed. The orange glow faded. "I must go now, but I'll always remember my new friend."

Emma waved as Finn disappeared. The next morning, her pool looked ordinary again. But Emma had changed. She wasn't afraid of storms anymore—now, when lightning flashed, she smiled, remembering her orange friend and the magical night they went swimming together.

Sometimes the scariest things lead to the most wonderful adventures, especially when you make an unexpected friend along the way.
