The Lightning Pool's Secret
Maya stood at the edge of the old swimming pool, her toes curling against the cracked concrete. It hadn't been used for years, but tonight something felt different. The summer air hummed with electricity, and storm clouds gathered overhead like giant gray pillows.
"Maya!" called her best friend Sam, running across the yard. "My mom says we need to go inside. There's going to be lightning!"
But Maya couldn't move. She'd noticed something strange. Every time lightning flashed far away, the empty pool seemed to shimmer and sparkle, as if reflecting something that wasn't there.
"Sam, come look!" Maya whispered. Sam hesitated, then joined her at the pool's edge.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck somewhere very close. CRACK! The whole world flashed white. And that's when they saw it — the empty pool wasn't empty anymore. It was filled with glowing, dancing lights, swirling like captured stars.
"It's beautiful," Sam breathed.
Maya reached out, and when her fingers touched the light, ripples spread across the pool's surface. Each ripple carried a tiny image — memories of fun times, friendship, and dreams.
"The lightning isn't just electricity," Maya realized. "It's magic that collects our happiest moments in pools everywhere."
For hours they sat together, watching memories dance — their first day of school, building treehouses, sharing secrets. The storm had given them something wonderful.
"I'm glad you're my friend," Sam said, as the lights slowly faded with the passing storm.
"Me too," Maya smiled. "And I'm glad we didn't go inside."
The next morning, the pool was empty again. But Maya and Sam knew its secret — sometimes the most magical things appear when you least expect them, especially when you're brave enough to stay and watch with a friend by your side.
