The Lightning Pool's Magic Friend
Lily loved summer evenings, especially when her grandma's papaya tree drooped heavy with golden fruit. But tonight, storm clouds gathered like gray giants across the sky.
"Stay inside, sweetie," Mama called. "I'm expecting an important call on my iPhone."
Lily nodded but tiptoed to the back door anyway. The backyard pool shimmered like liquid sapphire under the darkening sky. Something glittered at the bottom—something that sparkled even without sunlight.
*CRACK!*
Lightning fractured the sky, painting it purple and white. In that flash, Lily saw it: a tiny creature with wings like a dragonfly, floating just above the pool's surface.
"Hello!" called Lily, forgetting all about staying inside.
The creature zipped closer. It was no bigger than her thumb, with skin the color of papaya flesh—soft orange and pink. Its eyes shone like miniature lightning bolts.
"I'm Zappy!" the tiny being said in a voice like wind chimes.
Pool water rippled as Zappy landed on the pool's edge. "I come out during storms. The lightning gives me my sparkle-power!"
Lily's eyes widened. "That's amazing!"
Inside, Mama's iPhone buzzed with its important call, but Lily barely noticed. She was too busy making friends with a magical lightning sprite.
"You know," Zappy said, "I'm hungry. That papaya hanging from your grandma's tree looks delicious."
Lily gasped. "Grandma says those are the sweetest papayas in the whole world!"
"Would you share one with me?" Zappy asked hopefully. "I've never tasted papaya before."
Lily didn't hesitate. Friendship meant sharing, even with magical creatures. She reached up (on tiptoes!) and pulled down the ripest papaya. Grandma wouldn't mind—this was an emergency friendship situation.
Using her hands, Lily opened the papaya. Inside, seeds glistened like black pearls. She offered half to Zappy.
Zappy's eyes lit up with tiny lightning flashes. "This is the most wonderful thing I've ever tasted!"
Just then, the iPhone rang again. Mama stepped onto the porch, gasping when she saw the papaya-colored creature eating fruit with her daughter.
But instead of being scared, Mama smiled. "Some friends are worth waiting for."
Lily and Zappy sat by the pool as the storm passed, eating papaya and watching the lightning dance in the distance. And every time there was a storm after that, Zappy returned—bringing his sparkle magic and sharing papayas with his very best human friend.
