The Lightning Pool's Magic
Emma had the curliest hair in town — springs and coils that bounced when she walked. Her grandmother called it magic hair, but Emma just thought it was messy.
One summer evening, her dog Buster started barking at the old pond behind their house. Emma had never noticed the pond before, but now it shimmered with a strange blue light. Buster tugged at her dress, urging her closer.
The pool wasn't ordinary water. It rippled even though there was no wind, and tiny sparks danced across its surface like captured stars.
Suddenly, lightning flashed across the sky — not from clouds, but from the pool itself! Emma's hair stood straight up, tingling with electricity.
A small dragon made of pure light burst from the water, no bigger than Emma's hand. It chirped like a bird and spun circles around her.
"You awakened me!" the dragon sparkled. "Your magic hair and the lightning pool — it only happens once every hundred years!"
Buster wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. The dragon landed on his nose, and Buster sneezed tiny sparkles.
"Make a wish!" the dragon said.
Emma thought hard. She could wish for straight hair, or for fame, or for endless candy. But then she looked at Buster, whose happy eyes shone with love.
"I wish for my friends to always have someone who loves them as much as Buster loves me."
The dragon grew bright as the sun. "That," it said, "is the most powerful magic of all."
With a final bolt of lightning, the dragon disappeared. The pool became ordinary water again. But Emma's hair curled a little tighter, and she could have sworn Buster smiled at her.
That night, Emma touched her curls and smiled. Maybe her grandmother was right. Maybe messy, magical hair was perfect after all.
