The Lightning Pool
Maya stood at the edge of the swimming pool, clutching her iPhone tightly. Her grandmother had warned her about staying inside during storms, but Maya had been filming the dark clouds when lightning suddenly flashed across the sky.
A crack of thunder shook the ground. Rain poured down in sheets. Maya turned to run, but her phone slipped from her wet fingers and fell straight into the pool.
"No!" she cried, watching the screen sink beneath the water's surface.
Then something magical happened. The moment her phone touched the water, the entire pool began to glow a brilliant orange color, like liquid sunset. Lightning struck again, but instead of frightening her, it seemed to dance along the water's surface in beautiful ribbons of light.
Maya leaned closer, mesmerized. Through the glowing orange water, she saw her iPhone at the bottom, but it wasn't ruined. Instead, the screen showed a tiny door opening, and a tiny girl no bigger than her thumb swam out.
"Hello!" called the tiny girl. "I'm Orla. I've been waiting in the phone for someone brave enough to visit during a storm!"
Maya couldn't believe her eyes. "You live in my phone?"
"Only sometimes," Orla giggled, swimming through the orange light. "This pool is magic - it only wakes up during lightning storms. Would you like to see my world?"
Maya nodded, forgetting all about being afraid. She dipped her hand into the warm, glowing water. Instantly, she shrank until she was tiny too, swimming beside Orla through an underwater kingdom of crystal caves and singing fish.
They played for hours, racing through coral castles and riding on the backs of friendly turtles. Orla showed Maya that the best adventures weren't found on screens at all - they were waiting right outside, if you were brave enough to look.
As the storm passed, the orange glow faded. Maya found herself back beside the pool, her phone floating on the surface, perfectly dry.
"Will I see you again?" Maya whispered.
"Whenever the lightning dances," Orla's voice floated on the breeze.
Maya smiled, tucking her phone into her pocket. She'd discovered something magical: the real world held more wonder than any app could ever contain, especially when you were brave enough to explore it.
