The Lightning Pool

Mia loved swimming more than anything. Every summer day, she'd splash in the lake until her fingers wrinkled like raisins. Her wild red hair always dripped with water as she trudged home, leaving wet footprints on the sidewalk.

One afternoon, while searching for her favorite swimming spot, Mia discovered something magical. Behind the old willow tree, where she'd never looked before, shimmered a pool filled with water that glowed like liquid lightning.

"Who dares enter my domain?" a voice rumbled.

From the water rose a magnificent sphinx, her fur the color of sunset gold, with wings that sparkled like stars. But instead of a fierce face, the sphinx wore a floppy purple hat with a bright yellow feather.

"I'm Mia," she whispered, eyes wide. "I love to swim."

"Then you must pass my test," said the sphinx, adjusting her crooked hat. "What sparkles like lightning but tastes like blueberries?"

Mia thought hard. She knew about lightning from summer storms, and she knew blueberries from her grandmother's garden. But together?

"Magic tears from a cloud-fairy?" she guessed.

The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "Close enough!" She splashed water that turned into tiny blue butterflies. "You have the heart of a true adventurer."

"What's with the hat?" Mia asked, smiling.

"It reminds me to stay curious," the sphinx said. "The greatest magic is wonder."

That summer, Mia visited the sphinx every day. They played tag in the lightning-water, traded riddles, and invented new games. The sphinx taught Mia that magic lives everywhere—in a raindrop, in a friend's smile, in the question "What if?"

When autumn came, the pool faded. But Mia never forgot. She kept swimming, kept wondering, and always approached the world with curiosity, just like a sphinx in a purple hat would want.

And sometimes, during summer storms, she'd spot a familiar silhouette in the clouds, winging through the lightning, wearing that same silly hat.
