The Lightning Pool
Emma loved summer nights. She loved how the fireflies danced in the garden like tiny floating stars. But most of all, she loved the magic that happened when storms rolled in.
One particularly warm evening, Emma sat by her window watching dark clouds gather. Thunder rumbled like a sleepy giant waking up. Then she saw it—a flash of lightning that didn't just fade away. Instead, it danced!
The lightning bolt zigzagged toward the ground and splashed into her backyard pool. But instead of fizzling out, it turned the water into sparkling rainbow colors.
Emma's eyes grew wide. She crept downstairs in her pajamas and slipped out the back door. The pool glowed softly, shimmering with magic. A tiny girl made entirely of lightning swam gracefully through the water, leaving trails of light behind her like ribbons.
"Hello!" Emma called softly.
The lightning girl popped up, her hair crackling with tiny sparks. "I'm Zola! I've been swimming through storms for a hundred years, looking for the perfect pool. This one is lovely!"
"I'm Emma," she whispered. "Can I swim with you?"
Zola smiled. "Only if you're brave enough. Lightning swimming is for adventure hearts!"
Emma jumped in—and gasped with wonder. The water felt warm and bubbly, like swimming in a cloud. When she moved, little sparks followed her hands. Zola took Emma's hand, and together they swam through the glowing water, painting pictures with light.
"Most people are scared of me," Zola said sadly. "They hide from storms."
"They're missing the magic," Emma said. "Being brave means finding the wonder in scary things."
Zola beamed brighter than ever. "You're right! Thank you for swimming with me, Emma. Friends help us see the world differently."
As dawn approached, Zola had to go. "Every time there's a storm, look for my lightning! I'll visit your pool again."
Emma waved as Zola turned into a brilliant lightning bolt and zoomed back into the clouds. The pool returned to normal, but Emma knew better now.
Whenever storms came, Emma didn't hide. She watched for her friend, knowing that sometimes the most magical friendships come from the most surprising places—and that being brave enough to say hello can turn something scary into something wonderful.
