The Lightning Pool
Lily loved exploring the forest behind her house. One rainy afternoon, she followed a sparkling path she'd never seen before. It led to a secret pool hidden between ancient trees.
The water wasn't ordinary. It glowed with tiny captured lightning bolts, flickering like little stars trapped in the pool's depths. Lightning from storms had been falling here for hundreds of years, and the pool held them all.
"Hello there," said a soft voice. An old turtle sat on a mossy rock. "I'm Oliver. I guard this special place."
Lily's eyes widened. "The lightning... it's beautiful!"
"Yes," Oliver said sadly. "But they don't belong here. They miss the clouds, but no one knows how to send them home."
Lily looked at the flickering lights in the water. They did seem lonely, like little hearts far from home.
"Maybe I can help," she said.
Lily thought hard. Lightning came from clouds during storms. What if she could make a little storm?
She cupped her hands and scooped up some glowing water. Then she blew gently across her hands, like she'd seen the wind do. She twirled in circles, faster and faster, and sang a made-up song about clouds and sky.
Suddenly, the water in her hands began to rise! Tiny lightning bolts floated upward, joining together into a brilliant streak. It shot straight up through the tree branches, higher and higher, until it disappeared into the clouds above.
One by one, Lily helped all the lightning return home. The pool's water became clear again.
"Thank you," Oliver said, smiling. "You have a kind heart, Lily. Whenever you see lightning in the sky, remember that some of your friends are dancing up there."
That night, Lily watched from her window. The biggest lightning bolt she'd ever seen flashed across the sky, and she could have sworn it twinkled twice, just like her new friends above.
Sometimes the smallest kindnesses can set the brightest things free.
