The Lightning Pool

Lily loved the old swimming pool at the bottom of her garden. It hadn't held water for years, but on summer nights, it filled with something much more magical than rain.

One evening, Lily crept outside with her flashlight. The sky was dark, stars twinkling like tiny diamond chips. Suddenly—FLASH! A bolt of lightning shot from the clouds and disappeared right into the empty pool.

Lily's heart raced. She tiptoed closer and peeked over the edge. There, swimming in circles at the bottom, was a tiny creature made entirely of crackling blue light. It had glowing eyes and a smile that sparkled like fireworks.

"Hello," Lily whispered. The lightning-creature zipped to the surface, leaving trails of glitter behind.

"I'm Zap!" the little thing said in voice like tinkling bells. "Will you be my friend?"

Lily had never had a magical friend before. "Yes!" she breathed.

Every night that week, Lily returned to the pool. Zap showed her amazing tricks—writing her name in light across the sky, making flowers glow in the garden, even creating pictures in the air with tiny lightning bolts.

But one night, Zap looked sad. His glow was dimmer than usual.

"What's wrong?" Lily asked.

"The sky needs me," Zap said quietly. "Lightning helps the world. It brings rain to gardens and shows sailors the way home. I can't stay in this pool forever."

Lily felt a tear slide down her cheek. "But I'll miss you."

"True friends never really leave," Zap said. "They just light up different parts of your life."

Zap rose into the sky, brighter and more beautiful than ever. He became part of every storm—and whenever Lily saw lightning flash, she knew her friend was saying hello.

Now, whenever Lily meets someone new, she remembers Zap. The best friendships, she discovered, are the ones that make you shine brighter, even when they're far away.
