The Lightning Palm's Magic Pool
Lila loved the old palm tree at the edge of her grandmother's garden. Its fronds swished like sleepy fingers in the breeze, and its trunk was so wide that Lida could hide behind it during games of hide-and-seek.
One summer afternoon, while Lila sat beneath the palm, she noticed something strange. The tree's shadow pointed toward a small pool of water she'd never seen before. It shimmered like liquid silver, even though the sun wasn't shining directly on it.
Curious, Lila crept closer. The water wasn't just reflecting the sky — it was glowing from inside! Tiny lights danced beneath the surface, like stars caught in a jar.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" whispered a voice. Lila spun around to find an old woman with silver hair and kind eyes. "I'm Madame Zola, keeper of the Lightning Palm. This pool only appears when magic is needed most."
"Magic?" Lila breathed.
"Oh yes," Madame Zola nodded. "Every time lightning strikes this palm tree, a star falls into this pool. Those stars hold wishes — hopes and dreams that people are too afraid to speak aloud."
Suddenly, the sky darkened. Real lightning flashed across the clouds, striking the palm tree! But instead of hurting it, the bolt turned into a brilliant blue star that splashed into the pool.
"Quick!" Madame Zola urged. "Catch it before it sinks!"
Lila plunged her hand into the water. Her fingers closed around something warm and glowing. When she pulled it out, a tiny star sat in her palm, pulsing like a heartbeat.
"What should I do with it?" Lila asked.
"That's the fun part," Madame Zola smiled. "You get to grant its wish. But remember — the best wishes are the ones you share."
Lila thought of her best friend Sam, who was lonely because his family had just moved away. She closed her hand around the star and whispered, "I wish Sam knew he's still my best friend, no matter how far apart we are."
The star burst into a thousand tiny lights that swirled upward like fireflies, then shot into the sky in all directions.
The next morning, Lila's phone buzzed. It was Sam: "I had the craziest dream! Fireflies told me you were thinking of me. Can we video chat later?"
Lila grinned beneath the palm tree. Some magic was meant to be shared — and the best wishes always found their way home.
