The Lightning Palm Magic
Lily loved secrets. Especially the secrets hiding in her grandmother's garden. On a rainy afternoon, she discovered the strangest one yet.
Behind the old oak tree, something groaned. Lily crept closer. There, slumped against a palm tree, sat a little green creature with patches on his elbows and stitches holding his smile together.
"Are you... a zombie?" Lily whispered.
The creature nodded sadly. "I'm Zeb. But I'm not scary. I'm just lonely."
Zeb explained he'd been created by a storm's lightning bolt, which struck the palm tree above him. Now he was stuck between being magic and being real, and he couldn't figure out how to make friends.
"Nobody wants to play with a zombie," Zeb sighed.
Lily's eyes sparkled. "Maybe they've never met the RIGHT zombie."
She took Zeb's hand – which was slightly cool but gentle – and led him to her backyard. "Watch this."
Dark clouds gathered overhead. CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the ground, but instead of burning, it made wildflowers bloom instantly. Zeb's eyes widened.
"You control lightning?" he gasped.
"No," Lily laughed. "But YOU do. The lightning that made you is still part of you. You're not just a zombie, Zeb. You're a lightning zombie! You can grow magical things!"
Zeb concentrated hard. He reached toward a wilting sunflower, and tiny sparks danced from his palm. The flower stretched taller, brighter, more beautiful than ever.
"I did it!" Zeb cheered.
Soon, children from all over the neighborhood gathered to see Zeb's magic. He grew candy-striped pumpkins, rainbow roses, and flowers that glowed in the dark. No one was afraid of Zeb anymore – they were AMAZED by him.
That night, Zeb sat beneath his palm tree, but he wasn't lonely anymore. Lily sat beside him, eating lightning berries they'd grown together.
"You know," Zeb said, "I thought being different meant something was wrong with me."
Lily smiled. "Different just means you're special. Everyone has magic inside them. Sometimes they just need a friend to help them find it."
Above them, the stars twinkled like tiny lightning bolts, and Zeb knew he had found something even better than magic – he had found a friend who saw the wonder in everyone, even a zombie who could grow flowers from his palm.
