The Lightning Palm Magic

Lily loved her backyard swimming pool more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd splash and play until the sun went down. But her favorite time was when her best friend Toby came over.

One afternoon, dark clouds gathered above the tall palm tree that swayed near the pool fence. CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed purple and green, then disappeared into the palm fronds.

"Did you see that?" Toby gasped, eyes wide.

Lily nodded. The palm tree was glowing now, and something small and green tumbled down from its leaves. It was a tiny zombie, but not a scary one. This zombie wore a colorful Hawaiian shirt and had a big friendly smile.

"Hello!" the little zombie chirped. "I'm Zippy! The lightning woke me up from my fifty-year nap inside this palm tree!"

Lily and Toby were amazed. Zippy explained that long ago, a wizard had cast a sleeping spell on him. Only the magic of purple lightning could wake him up.

"I'm so lonely," Zippy sighed. "Everyone runs away when they see me."

"We won't run away!" Lily said firmly. "Do you want to play in the pool with us?"

Zippy's green face lit up. He'd never been swimming before. The three friends spent the afternoon doing cannonballs and having splash contests. Zippy couldn't swim, so Lily lent him her bright pink flamingo floatie.

When Zippy laughed, tiny sparkles of lightning danced around him. Toby discovered that Zippy could make underwater bubbles glow like little stars.

"You're not scary at all," Toby said. "You're magical!"

As the sun set, Zippy's grandfather called him home for zombie dinner. "Will you come back tomorrow?" Lily asked.

"Every day!" Zippy promised, hugging his new friends with green, sparkly arms. "Being different just means you have special magic to share!"

That night, Lily and Toby learned something wonderful: sometimes the most unexpected friendships are the best ones of all.
