The Lightning Orange

Milo was peeling his afternoon snack when something extraordinary happened. The orange in his hand suddenly flashed with a brilliant burst of light, and a tiny lightning bolt no bigger than a finger zipped out!

"Whoops! Sorry about that!" chirped the little lightning, dancing in mid-air like a glowing ribbon. "I was taking a nap!"

Milo's dog, Barnaby, lifted his head from his bed and trotted over, tail wagging. The golden retriever seemed to understand something magical was happening.

"I'm Spark!" said the tiny lightning bolt. "And I'm in big trouble. I need to get back to the clouds before sunset, or I'll fade away forever. Lightning clouds only open for five minutes at twilight!"

Milo looked at the clock. "That's only an hour away!"

Barnaby barked excitedly and ran to the back door, looking back at them.

"Barnaby's right!" said Milo. "We can take you to the old oak tree - it's the tallest thing in the neighborhood!"

The three friends rushed outside. The backyard had never seemed so full of possibilities. They climbed the tree, Milo carrying Spark carefully in his pocket. Barnaby waited below, barking encouragement.

From the highest branch, Milo reached up as the first stars appeared. Spark zipped upward, growing brighter and stronger. "Thank you, Milo! Thank you, Barnaby! Remember - sometimes the smallest friends can make the biggest difference!"

Spark shot into the purple sky just as a real lightning bolt cracked above. For a moment, the clouds swirled in a brilliant orange glow.

That night, Milo fell asleep with Barnaby curled beside him. And whenever a storm came after that, he'd look for a tiny orange flash among the bolts, knowing his friend was still up there, doing the important work of lighting up the sky.
