The Lightning Orange
Toby loved running more than anything. He ran through meadows, ran along streams, and ran around his backyard until his mom called him for dinner. But Toby had never run during a storm before.
One rainy afternoon, the sky turned dark as grape jelly. Thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy. Flash! A bolt of lightning split the sky, dancing across the clouds in jagged white lines. Most kids would hide inside, but Toby stood at his window, mesmerized.
Then something incredible happened. A glowing orange fell from the sky during a lightning flash. It landed with a soft bounce in the garden below.
"That's impossible," Toby whispered. But there it was—an ordinary orange that had fallen from heaven itself.
He crept outside and touched it. The fruit felt warm, like a tiny sun. Suddenly, a sparkly creature the size of a butterfly zipped out! It was made of pure lightning, crackling and golden.
"Thank you for freeing me!" the little sprite chirped. "I'm Zippy, and I was trapped inside that orange for a hundred years!"
Toby's eyes widened. "A lightning sprite? But how?"
"Lightning sprites sleep inside oranges when we're tired," Zippy explained, zooming around Toby's head. "The sweet peels keep us safe until we wake up!"
"Can I help you get home?" Toby asked.
"Yes! But we must hurry!" Zippy bobbed in the air. "I need to reach Cloud Castle before the storm ends. It's at the top of Lightning Peak, but I'm too weak to fly there alone."
"I'm really fast at running," Toby said bravely. "Hop on my shoulder!"
Zippy landed gently, making Toby's hair stand up like he'd rubbed a balloon on his head. Then Toby began running—faster than he'd ever run before. His sneakers slapped the muddy path as he raced up Lightning Peak.
"Faster! Faster!" Zippy cheered, crackling with excitement. The sprite glowed brighter with every step, illuminating the dark path like a tiny lantern.
Toby's legs burned. His breath came in gasps. But he kept running, thinking of Zippy's home. Friendship is the best fuel, his grandmother always said.
Finally, they reached the summit just as another lightning bolt flashed overhead.
"Now!" Zippy shouted. Toby cupped his hands, and the sprite leaped into the sky, merging perfectly with the lightning bolt. For one magical moment, the bolt spelled out: THANK YOU!
Toby waved, tired but happy. Walking home, he found the orange still waiting in his garden. He peeled it open—it was the sweetest orange he'd ever tasted.
That night, Toby fell asleep with a full tummy and a full heart. Sometimes the most magical adventures come when you're running to help a friend.
