The Lightning Orange

Maya was sitting on her front porch when the storm began. Rain pattered against the roof, and distant thunder rumbled like a sleepy giant waking up. In her hand, she held the roundest, brightest orange she had ever seen – one she'd picked from her grandmother's tree that morning.

Suddenly, a flash of lightning split the sky, brighter than anything Maya had ever seen. It struck her orange!

Maya jumped back, but instead of burning, the orange began to glow. Tiny lightning bolts danced across its surface like golden fireflies. Inside the glowing rind, something moved.

"Hello?" a tiny voice squeaked.

Maya's eyes went wide. "Hello? Is someone... in my orange?"

The orange cracked open, and out popped the smallest creature Maya had ever seen – no bigger than her thumb, with skin that shimmered like sunrise and hair that sparked with tiny bolts of lightning.

"I'm Zapp!" the creature said. "I'm a Storm Sprite. I was sleeping in your orange until the lightning woke me up!"

Maya couldn't believe it. A real magical creature, right here! "I'm Maya. Do you have a home?"

Zapp's face fell. "My cloud home blew away in a big wind last week. I've been looking for it ever since."

Maya knew what it felt like to lose something important. "We can find it together! I'll be your friend, Zapp. Friends help each other."

Zapp's whole body brightened. "Really? You'd help me?"

Maya nodded. "But first, you need shelter from this rain."

She led Zapp to her treehouse, where they made a tiny bed from cotton balls and spent the night telling stories about storms and stars and what it felt like to ride on lightning bolts.

The next morning, the sun came out. Zapp pointed to a fluffy white cloud drifting by.

"That's my home!" Zapp cheered. "It came back!"

Maya helped Zapp climb to the highest branch, where the cloud dipped down low. Before Zapp hopped aboard, the sprite hugged Maya's finger.

"Thank you for being my friend, Maya. Friends are like lightning – they brighten your whole world!"

As Zapp rode away on the cloud, Maya's orange began to glow again. Inside, she found three tiny orange seeds, each one sparkling with little lightning bolts.

She planted them in her garden, knowing that sometimes the best friendships begin in the most unexpected ways – even inside a piece of fruit during a storm.
