The Lightning Orange
Lily loved watching storms from her bedroom window. Rain drumming on the glass, wind whooshing through the trees—she loved it all. But her favorite part was the lightning.
One rainy afternoon, lightning flashed brighter than ever before. It struck the orange tree in Lily's backyard with a CRACK that made her jump. But she wasn't scared. She was curious.
Lily grabbed her yellow raincoat and boots and ran outside. In the middle of the garden, something glowed. It wasn't burnt or broken—it was beautiful. An orange from the tree now sparkled with tiny lightning bolts dancing across its peel.
"Are you okay?" Lily whispered, picking it up gently.
The orange wiggled in her palm. Then it spoke! "I'm wonderful! Thank you for asking!"
Lily almost dropped it. "You can talk?"
"I can do lots of things now!" said the orange. "I'm Sparky! The lightning gave me magic!"
Sparky showed Lily his tricks. He could make tiny rainbows appear in the rain. He could light up dark corners with his glow. He could even make the happiest music just by wiggling his peel.
"Will you be my friend?" Lily asked. She didn't have many friends at school.
"I'd love to!" Sparky cheered. "But you must promise to share your wonder with others. Magic grows when shared!"
The next day, Lily brought Sparky to school. At first, everyone stared. But when Sparky made lightning-shaped drawings appear in the air and taught the class how to dance in the rain, no one laughed. They all wanted to be part of the magic.
Lily learned something wonderful that day: the best magic isn't lightning or glowing oranges. It's sharing what makes you special with others. That's how you find true friends.
And every time it rained after that, Lily and her new friends would run outside, waiting for the lightning that had brought them Sparky—and each other.
