The Lightning Orange

Lily loved climbing the old oak tree in her backyard. One afternoon, she discovered something strange—a thick steel cable wrapped around the highest branch, shimmering with golden light.

Curious, she tugged the cable. WHOOSH! The tree lifted her into the clouds! At the top sat a tiny orange creature with wings like hummingbird feathers.

"I'm Pip!" the creature squeaked. "Will you be my friend?"

"Yes!" Lily cried.

Pip fluttered around her. "I need help. The lightning garden is dying!"

"Lightning can't grow in gardens," Lily said.

"Mine does!" Pip led her to a floating island where bolts of lightning danced like fireflies among rows of glowing green spinach plants. "Storm spinach gives dreams their magic. But the lightning storms have stopped coming."

Lily noticed an orange cloud drifting far away. "What's that?"

"The Storm Maker!" Pip gasped. "He's lonely and stopped making weather. Maybe he needs a friend too!"

Lily grabbed the cable and swung toward the orange cloud. Inside sat a giant thundercloud with a sad face.

"Hello," Lily said softly. "I'm Lily. This is Pip. Want to play?"

The Storm Maker's eyes brightened. "Nobody ever visits me."

"We'll visit every day!" Lily promised. "Will you make lightning for the spinach garden?"

The Storm Maker smiled and sent gentle bolts dancing across the sky. The spinach plants glowed brighter than stars.

"Thank you!" Pip cheered. "Now children everywhere will have magical dreams!"

That night, Lily fell asleep wondering what other magical friends were waiting to be found. Sometimes, she learned, the best adventures start with a single friendship—and a little bit of enchanted spinach.
