The Lightning Orange

Max loved baseball more than anything. But every time he stepped up to the plate, his knees shook like leaves in a storm. He wanted to be brave like his older sister, who hit home runs as easily as breathing.

One afternoon, Max sat under the old oak tree in his backyard, eating a juicy orange. Storm clouds gathered overhead, dark and grumbling. Suddenly—CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the tree branch right above him.

Max squeezed his eyes shut. When he opened them, something magical lay in his palm. The orange slice he'd been holding now glowed with a soft golden light, pulsing like a tiny heartbeat.

"Wow," he whispered.

A fairy no bigger than his thumb fluttered from the orange's glow. She had wings like dragonfly wings and hair the color of sunshine.

"You've been chosen, Max," she said in a voice like wind chimes. "This is a Courage Vitamin, brewed by lightning and sweet orange dreams. One bite, and you'll find your brave."

Max's eyes went wide. "Really?"

The fairy nodded. "But remember—true bravery isn't about not being scared. It's about being scared and doing what matters anyway. That's the real magic."

Max took a bite. The orange tasted like sunshine and starlight and possibility.

The next day was the big championship game. Max's team, the Thunderbolts, was losing by one run. Bases loaded. Two outs. Max stepped to the plate, his heart thudding like thunder.

He was still scared. His hands trembled. But he remembered what the fairy said.

Bravery isn't about not being scared.

He took a deep breath, thought of his glowing orange, and swung with everything he had.

CRACK! The ball sailed over the fence—a home run! His teammates cheered, but Max felt something even better. He'd faced his fear and won.

That night, Max looked at the empty orange peel on his nightstand. The lightning bolt that had struck it had faded, but the magic it brought—the magic of courage—would stay with him forever.
