The Lightning Moment

Maya sat cross-legged on her bed, thumbs flying across her iPhone as doomscrolling became her entire personality. Another sunset. Another aesthetic lunch. Another post from Chloe about her new "wellness journey" with some random vitamin company that definitely wasn't a pyramid scheme, despite what everyone said at lunch yesterday.

"You're not even trying anymore," Chloe had snapped when Maya turned down the "opportunity" to join her sales team. "Some friend you are."

The word stung. Friend. Since when had friendship become transactional? Since when did Maya need to buy expensive supplements to maintain a seven-year friendship?

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up.

"Did you see Chloe's story?"

"She's already at 2K followers"

"She said she made $500 this week"

Maya typed out a response, deleted it. Typed again. The screen glowed against her face in the dark room, casting weird blue shadows. Outside, thunder rumbled.

Suddenly - CRACK.

Lightning struck so close the room lit up like a camera flash. Her iPhone went black. Power out.

In the darkness, Maya actually breathed. For the first time in days, maybe weeks.

She grabbed her old journal from the nightstand. Found the entry from last summer: sitting on Chloe's roof, eating cheap popsicles, talking about nothing and everything, back when friendship was just showing up. Before the iPhone notifications and carefully curated posts and pressure to monetize everything.

The lights flickered back on. Her phone chimed with missed notifications.

Maya pushed it to the foot of her bed.

Some pyramids were meant to collapse. Some vitamins were just placebos. And sometimes losing power was the only way to find it again.

She grabbed her skateboard instead. Real friends would still be there when the lights came back on.
