The Lightning Message
Lily sat beneath the swaying palm tree in her backyard, her golden retriever Sunny resting his head on her knee. The summer sky darkened as storm clouds gathered like giant gray pillows.
"Do you feel that, Sunny?" Lily whispered, scratching behind his ears. Sunny's tail thumped against the grass. He always knew when something magical was about to happen.
CRACK! Lightning flashed across the sky, painting the clouds purple and pink. But this wasn't ordinary lightning. As the bolt struck near their palm tree, tiny golden sparks drifted down like glowing snowflakes.
Sunny barked joyfully and chased the sparks, leaping through the air as they danced around him. Lily laughed and held out her palm, catching one of the glowing bits. It tickled!
Her iPhone, sitting on the picnic blanket, suddenly chimed. Not her usual ringtone, but a sound like tiny bells. Lily picked it up. The screen glowed with the same golden light as the lightning sparks.
A message appeared, typed in shimmering letters: "Thank you for playing with my lightning sparkles. You and your dog brought joy to a lonely storm cloud. - Your Friend, The Thunder King"
Lily gasped. The Thunder King!
"Sunny! We made a friend in the clouds!" Sunny woofed in agreement, his tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled.
The storm clouds broke apart, revealing a brilliant rainbow. Where the rainbow touched the ground near their palm tree, beautiful wildflowers sprang up instantly—flowers that glowed softly, even as the sun set.
Every storm after that, Lily and Sunny would sit beneath their palm tree, waiting for the Thunder King's lightning. And every time, her iPhone would chime with a message of friendship, written in glowing letters.
The other kids thought Lily was making up stories. But Lily knew the truth: sometimes, magic happens when you least expect it, especially when you're with your best friend, and especially when you look at the world with wonder in your heart.
