The Lightning Message
Lily loved her new pet goldfish, Orangey, who swam in a bowl on her nightstand. But Lily felt lonely. Her parents were busy, and her big brother was always on his iPhone, thumbs tapping away.
One rainy afternoon, Lily pressed her nose against the glass bowl. "I wish you could talk, Orangey."
Suddenly, the room flashed bright purple. Lightning struck outside—CRACK!—and Orangey began to glow. The tiny fish swam to the surface and spoke in a bubbly voice.
"I can talk! But only during lightning storms. This is my magic time!"
Lily gasped. "Really?"
"Really!" Orangey did a happy flip. "Want to see something amazing?"
The lightning flashed again, and Orangey's scales turned into tiny screens, just like her brother's iPhone but filled with dancing stars and swirling galaxies.
"This is FishFlix!" Orangey bubbled. "Fish television from the ocean's deepest parts. Watch!"
Lily watched incredible shows: crab basketball, octopus painting, singing whales who performed concerts. It was magical!
Then she noticed her brother outside his door, still on his phone, missing all the wonder.
"Hey!" Lily called. "You have to see this!"
Her brother rolled in. "What? A fish? Cool trick." He went back to his iPhone.
Orangey whispered, "Some people would rather watch their screens than see real magic. But you're different, Lily. You noticed me."
Lily smiled. "I'll never be too busy for magic."
The storm passed. Orangey stopped glowing and returned to swimming silently. But now Lily understood: the best adventures aren't on any screen. They're right in front of you, waiting to be noticed.
That night, Lily drew pictures of all she'd seen, while Orangey swam peacefully, glad he'd found a friend who knew that real magic doesn't need lightning to be wonderful—just someone willing to look.
