The Lightning Keeper's Secret
Lila loved stormy nights. When thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy and rain tapped dance rhythms on her windowpane, she pressed her nose against the glass, waiting for the magic show.
One particularly wild evening, a bolt of lightning flashed so bright it turned her bedroom purple. CRACK! Something tumbled through her open window and landed with a soft thump on her rug.
Lila crept closer. It was a miniature pyramid, no bigger than her fist, glowing with an inner golden light. But the most amazing part was the tiny creature sitting on top—a sphinx, small enough to fit in her palm, with a lion's body, eagle wings, and a face that looked both ancient and young.
"Thank the stars!" the sphinx said, shaking droplets from her fur. "I was blown right off the Lightning Peak!"
Lila's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"All sphinxes can talk," the creature said proudly. "I'm Seraphina, Keeper of the Storm Pyramids. We collect lightning from the biggest storms and store it inside pyramids to give back to the sky on starless nights. That's how stars are born!"
Seraphina's tiny face fell. "But tonight's storm was too strong. My pyramid fell through the clouds, and now I can't return the lightning without reaching the top of the sky."
Lila's mind raced. "What if I help you?"
Together they hatched a plan. Lila climbed to her roof with Seraphina and the glowing pyramid. "When the next lightning comes," Seraphina instructed, "hold the pyramid up high and say 'Return what belongs to the sky!'
Another storm cloud gathered. Lightning zigzagged closer. Lila's heart hammered.
"Now!" cried Seraphina.
Lila thrust the pyramid upward. "Return what belongs to the sky!"
The pyramid burst open, releasing a stream of golden light that shot straight up. It met the lightning, and suddenly the sky filled with glittering new stars where darkness had been.
Seraphina flew up, spiraling joyfully. "You did it! Every star you helped create will light someone's way home tonight."
"But won't you need the pyramid again?" Lila called.
Seraphina grinned, her wings catching starlight. "Oh, there's always more lightning to catch. And now I have a friend who isn't afraid of storms!"
From that night on, whenever thunder rumbled, Lila knew it wasn't just weather—it was magic in the making, and somewhere Seraphina was busy turning storms into stars.
