The Lightning in the Water
Maria sat at the edge of the hotel pool, legs submerged in water that felt too warm, too artificial. Richard was at the bar, nursing his third whiskey. She'd left her iphone on the lounge chair, but Richard's had buzzed—some notification she couldn't ignore.
She shouldn't have looked. But the screen had lit up with a message: "Game's at 7. Don't forget the package."
Baseball. Richard hated baseball. Yet there were messages—dozens of them—about games, odds, money changing hands in parking lots. A baseball gambling ring he'd hidden for months, debts mounting, threats whispered in text messages she'd never meant to find.
The sky darkened. First storm of the season.
Maria walked to the bar, phone in hand. Richard didn't notice her approach until she placed the device on the counter, screen glowing with evidence of his double life.
"Care to explain?" she asked, voice steadier than she felt.
Richard's face crumbled. The bartender tactfully vanished.
"It started small," he said. "Just a few bets. Then I couldn't stop."
Outside, lightning fractured the sky. The pool's surface shimmered with each strike, water turning electric, reflecting a world cracking open.
"How much?" Maria asked.
"Seventy thousand."
The number hung between them like the heat before a storm.
"That's our daughter's tuition," she said.
He wept into his whiskey. She watched lightning illuminate the pool again—water turning to light, then dark, then light. A cycle of revelation and concealment, just like her marriage.
"I'll fix it," he promised. "I swear."
Maria knew what he meant: he'd fix the debt. But the trust? The lies? Some things lightning destroys beyond repair.
She picked up his iphone, thumb hovering over delete, then over transfer. Instead, she pocketed both phones.
"Swim with me," she said, stripping off her cover-up.
Richard stared. "Now? In this?"
"Lightning strikes the highest point," she said, stepping into the illuminated water. "We're safe as long as we stay low together."
For tonight, they would. Tomorrow would bring lawyers, repayment plans, the slow dismantling of a life built on secrets. But in the electric water, under a sky tearing itself open, they were just two people trying to stay afloat.
