The Lightning in My Palm
When I was seven, lightning changed everything.
Thunder rattled my window. Rain slashed against the glass. I curled under my blankets, heart pounding. Everyone says lightning is dangerous. Everyone says to hide.
Then something amazing happened.
A tiny spark flickered through my closed window - not scary, but beautiful. It danced across my floor like a glowing firefly, pulsing with soft blue light. Curious, I peeked from my blankets.
The spark floated closer. It wasn't just light. It had a tiny face with enormous eyes, delicate wings like a dragonfly, and the sweetest smile I'd ever seen.
"Hello!" it chirped, sounding like wind chimes. "I'm Zippy!"
"You're... lightning?" I whispered.
Zippy spun around my room. "I'm a lightning sprite! I fell from the clouds during that big flash outside. Now I'm stuck here until I recharge."
He drifted lower, looking tired. His glow dimmed.
"What do you need?" I asked.
"Energy," Zippy said. "Lightning sprites recharge through touch. May I...?"
I extended my palm. Zippy landed gently. Warmth spread through my hand - not burning, but cozy, like sunlight. He glowed brighter.
"Thank you, friend!" Zippy cheered. "You're so kind!"
Friend. The word sparkled inside me.
Suddenly, thunder crashed. Zippy flinched.
"Scary, right?" I said. "I hate thunder."
Zippy giggled. "Thunder's just the clouds saying 'WOW!' when lightning makes beautiful art! Watch!"
He zipped to my window. Outside, lightning streaked across the sky - silver, purple, pink.
"See?" Zippy said. "Each flash is unique! My family paints the sky!"
My fear dissolved. Lightning wasn't dangerous. It was magical art.
For hours, Zippy showed me lightning's secrets - how it danced, how it created, how it was nature's celebration. We laughed as thunder rumbled, shouting "WOW!" together with the clouds.
When the storm passed, Zippy grew strong again.
"Time to go home," he said sadly. "But I'll never forget you, friend."
He touched my palm one last time. "Whenever you see lightning, remember - it's just the sky saying hello!"
Zippy shot upward, a brilliant streak joining the clouds. A final spark winked from the clearing sky.
I fell asleep smiling, palm tingling with warmth.
Now, during every storm, I press my palm to the window. Lightning flashes, and I whisper, "Hello, friend!" Sometimes, I see a tiny spark dancing in the rain - Zippy, saying hello back.
I'm never scared of lightning anymore. Because once, lightning landed in my palm and became my friend.
And that's the most magical thing of all.
