The Lightning in Her Palm

The spinach salad sat untouched on the table, wilting in the restaurant's oppressive heat. Elena stared at her iPhone, willing it to light up with his text, but the screen remained stubbornly dark.

"Your hair," David said suddenly, reaching across the table.

She flinched. His palm grazed her cheek, his thumb catching a loose strand that had escaped her messy bun. For three years, his touch had grounded her. Now it felt like electricity before a storm—that dangerous, beautiful lightning that could either illuminate or destroy.

"You still have spinach in your teeth," he added softly.

Elena's laugh was brittle. She'd spent twenty minutes in the restaurant bathroom checking her reflection, obsessing over whether the gray at her temples showed more today than last week. David noticed none of it. He never had.

The corporate merger announcement had come through on her phone at 9:01 AM. David's company was acquiring hers. He'd be her boss by Monday. They'd spent the morning in bed like nothing had changed, his fingers tracing the invisible map of her back, both pretending that tomorrow wasn't coming.

"I should go," she said.

David's hand lingered on her face. "Elena."

She stood up, her chair scraping against the floor. The spinach on her plate had turned to slime under the dressing. Outside, the sky bruised purple, clouds gathering in the distance.

"This was the last time," she said.

"I know."

He ordered another whiskey anyway. She walked out into the humidity, her iPhone finally vibrating with a message she couldn't bring herself to read. The first lightning strike cracked the sky open as she reached her car, and she thought: some endings come like weather, inevitable and terrible, while others you choose yourself, palm open and waiting for what falls.
