The Lightning Hat Incident

lightningfriendhairpyramidhat

The gym smelled like cheap punch and eighth-grade desperation. My friend Maya dragged me toward the DJ booth, her wild hair escaping its bun like she'd been struck by lightning. Which, honestly, described my entire social life.

"You need this," she insisted, shoving a neon yellow pyramid hat onto my head. The floor vibrated with bass that made my teeth ache. Someone had taped glow sticks to the hat's peaks. I looked like a radioactive pharaoh.

"Maya, no."

"Maya YES." She was already backing away, filming on her phone. "Own it, girl!"

Then the power cut. Complete darkness. The music died. Someone screamed—maybe me.

A strobe light flickered to life, cutting through the darkness like actual lightning. And there I was, glowing like a nuclear mistake, while everyone stared. My crush, Tyler, was looking right at me.

But then—this is the part I'd replay in my head a thousand times—someone started chanting. "PYRAMID HAT! PYRAMID HAT!" It was Tyler.

Maya reappeared out of nowhere, throwing an arm around my shoulders. "See? Iconic."

I took a breath. I adjusted my radioactive pyramid. And I started dancing. Awkwardly. Weirdly. Unapologetically.

Later, Tyler would tell me he'd never forget the girl with the glowing pyramid hat who owned the dance floor during a blackout. We'd date for six months. But the real relationship that lasted? The one with Maya, who knew exactly when to push me toward the light—even when it came in the form of the most ridiculous hat in history.

Some friends give you advice. The best ones give you lightning moments that change everything.
