The Lightning Hair Girl
Ruby hated spinach. Every night, her mom placed those green leaves on her plate, and every night, Ruby pushed them away. But everything changed on the stormy Tuesday when she found the glowing orange in the backyard.
The orange pulsed with golden light, warmer than sunshine. When Ruby peeled it, no juice dripped. Instead, a tiny crystal pyramid tumbled into her palm, no bigger than her thumb. Strange symbols sparkled on its sides.
"Hello?" a voice squeaked from inside.
A door opened on the pyramid's face, and out stepped a girl the size of Ruby's hand, with hair made of crackling lightning bolts. Tiny sparks danced around her face like fireflies.
"I'm Zap!" the lightning-haired girl announced. "And you're in big trouble!"
"Me?" Ruby asked, trembling.
"The Storm King is stealing all the world's magic!" Zap's hair flashed brighter. "He's trapped in my pyramid, and only someone brave can help free the magic back into the world. But you must be strong."
Ruby's knees shook. "I'm not strong. I can't even eat my spinach."
Zap laughed, a sound like tiny bells. "Oh, but spinach holds the greatest magic of all! In our world, it's what gives heroes their strength. One leaf makes you mighty enough to move mountains. Ten leaves? You could fly!"
Ruby's eyes widened. "Really?"
"Really. But the Storm King has stolen all our spinach fields. Without them, nobody can fight back." Zap reached into her crystal pyramid and pulled out a single emerald-green leaf. "This is the last one. Will you help us?"
Ruby remembered her mom's words: "You never know until you try." She took the spinach leaf and ate it.
Power surged through her! She could feel lightning running through her veins, strength bubbling in her muscles. Ruby grew until she towered above the trees. With the magic spinach's help, she reached into the storm clouds and pulled the Storm King from his throne of thunder.
"Please," he whispered, his stormy eyes fading to soft gray. "I just wanted to be strong too."
Ruby smiled and placed him gently on the ground. "Strength isn't about taking," she said. "It's about sharing." She planted the remaining spinach seeds in her backyard, creating a magical garden that made everyone who ate from it kind and brave.
That night, Ruby ate every spinach leaf on her plate. And when lightning flashed across the sky, she winked at her reflection in the window, knowing her new friend Zap was dancing among the stars.
