The Lightning Hair Crisis

Maya's hair had become a sentient being. Somewhere between the purple dye job and the chemical burn, her curls had formed a rebellious pyramid on top of her head—part sculpture, part cry for help.

"You look like a zombie," her brother Leo announced from the doorway, clutching his stuffed bear like it was emotional support.

"Thanks, Leo. Really boosting the confidence."

"No, literally. You've been studying for finals since Friday. It's Tuesday, Maya. You're moving like the undead."

He wasn't wrong. Between APUSH pressure, the fallout with her friend group, and the accidental hair disaster that had somehow become her entire personality, Maya was running on three hours of sleep and desperation.

Outside, lightning fractured the sky, followed immediately by thunder that rattled the windowframe. The storm mirrored her internal chaos perfectly.

"Your hair though," Leo said, setting down his bear. "It's got verticality. Architectural interest."

"It's a disaster. Everyone's gonna stare at lunch."

"They're gonna stare anyway." He shrugged. "At least this time they'll have something to talk about besides the whole thing with Sarah and them."

Maya's phone buzzed. A group chat notification. Her stomach dropped. Then: a text from her lab partner. lightning emoji. "study session still on?"

She looked in the mirror. The purple pyramid defied gravity and explanation. But somehow, it felt like her. Not the version of herself she'd been curating for years, but something messier. Something real.

"Yeah," she told Leo. "It's actually kind of iconic."

"Bear said you'd come around."

"You named the bear?"

"Sir Fluff. He's got excellent taste."

Maya laughed. For the first time in days, she didn't feel like she was faking it. Let them stare. Her hair was a disaster, but it was HER disaster.
