The Lightning Goldfish's Magical Game

Lily's favorite friend was Finnegan, a tiny orange goldfish who lived in a glass bowl on her nightstand. Every night, she'd tap gently on the glass and whisper, "Good night, Finnegan." The fish would swim to the surface and blow bubbles that almost sounded like words.

One afternoon, Lily was playing baseball in her backyard when her mom sliced up a fresh papaya for a snack. The orange fruit glowed in the sunlight, reminding Lily of Finnegan's scales. As she took a bite, something magical happened.

A streak of lightning crackled across the clear blue sky — impossible and wonderful! At that exact moment, Lily's iPhone, sitting on the picnic table, began to flash with golden light. Finnegan's face appeared on the screen, but he wasn't a fish anymore. He was a tiny boy with orange hair and sparkle-filled eyes.

"Lily!" he called out through the phone. "The lightning has opened the portal! Throw your baseball through the papaya tree's branches!"

Lily didn't question how her goldfish could talk or appear on her phone. Sometimes, magic just happens, and brave children know to trust it. She gripped her baseball tightly, closed her eyes, and threw it right through the papaya tree's leaves.

WHOOSH! The baseball began to glow, and suddenly Lily was shrinking, growing smaller and smaller until she was fish-sized herself. She found herself in a magical underwater kingdom where Finnegan was actually a prince.

"Thank you for believing in me," Prince Finnegan said. "For three years, I've been trapped as a goldfish, waiting for someone kind enough to rescue me. Only a friend who truly cares can break the spell."

He handed her a magical papaya seed. "Plant this in your world. It will grow into a portal tree, so we can visit each other whenever we miss our best friend."

Lily planted the seed that very evening. Now, whenever lightning streaks across the sky, she and Finnegan have magical adventures together. She learned that sometimes the smallest friends — even fish in bowls — can have the biggest hearts, and that true friendship can break any spell.

And every baseball game? She makes sure to hit a home run, just in case Finnegan is watching from his magical kingdom, cheering for his best friend.
