The Lightning Goldfish's Magic Wish

Lily loved rainy days. She would press her nose against the window, watching droplets race down the glass like tiny silver tears. But this storm was different.

CRACK! Lightning flashed purple across the sky, striking the old fountain in Lily's backyard. When the storm passed, Lily rushed outside in her yellow rain hat and boots. Something was flopping in the fountain — a tiny goldfish with scales that shimmered like captured starlight.

"Hello, little friend," Lily whispered, scooping the goldfish into a jar of water. The fish did something extraordinary. It spoke!

"Thank you, kind human. The lightning gave me magic powers, but I'm far from home."

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"For one hour only," said the goldfish. "I can grant one wish before my magic fades. What does your heart desire?"

Lily thought hard. She could wish for toys, or candy, or a castle. But then she remembered her grandmother, who couldn't walk to the garden anymore to see her favorite flowers.

"I wish for my grandmother to dance in her garden again," Lily said.

The goldfish glowed brighter than a thousand fireflies. "A wish for others is the most powerful magic of all. But first, I need energy. Do you have any... spinach?"

"Spinach?" Lily giggled. "Mommy says it makes you strong!"

She ran inside and returned with a fresh spinach leaf. The goldfish ate it and — WHOOSH! — transformed into a magnificent water sprite with fins like rainbows.

Together, they flew to Lily's grandmother's house. The sprite sprinkled magic water on the grandmother's legs, and suddenly she could dance! She twirled through her garden, laughing with joy.

"Thank you," the grandmother told Lily, hugging her tight. "Your wish gave me back my happiness."

The goldfish's magic faded, and Lily returned him to a beautiful pond where other fish lived. "Visit me anytime," he said.

Lily learned that day: the best wishes are the ones that help others, and magic tastes even better with a little spinach!
