The Lightning Goldfish of Summer
Max stood at the edge of the baseball field, his stomach tied in knots. Tomorrow was the big tryout, and he couldn't even hit the ball past the pitcher's mound. The other kids called him "Butterfingers" behind his back.
That evening, as thunder rumbled and lightning flashed across the sky, Max spotted something glowing in a puddle near the dugout. A tiny goldfish, shimmering with an electric blue light, was swimming in circles despite the rain washing over it.
"You're special," Max whispered, crouching down. The goldfish leaped an inch into the air and actually spoke. "I'm Flash! I got struck by lightning yesterday and gained magic powers!" The fish did a backflip, leaving rainbow ripples in the puddle.
Max's eyes widened. "Can you help me with baseball?"
Flash considered this. "I can give you my secret lightning vitamins!" The fish spat three sparkling droplets onto Max's palm. "These aren't ordinary vitamins. Each one gives you a different gift: courage, focus, and joy."
Max swallowed them, feeling warmth spread through his chest. He practiced swinging his bat until midnight, Flash cheering from his puddle. Something changed—Max wasn't thinking about missing anymore. He was having fun.
At tryouts the next day, Max stepped to the plate. The pitcher threw a fastball, and Max swung with perfect timing. CRACK! The ball sailed over the fence—his first home run ever. His teammates rushed him, lifting him onto their shoulders.
"Butterfingers no more!" shouted the captain.
That evening, Max brought Flash a special jar filled with pond water and placed it on his nightstand. "You're my best friend, Flash."
The goldfish smiled, which is quite a feat for a fish. "You didn't need magic vitamins, Max. You believed in yourself, and that's the strongest power of all. The lightning just helped you see what was already inside."
Max grinned, understanding now. Sometimes help comes from unexpected places, but true confidence grows from within. And somewhere in his room, a magical goldfish did a victory swim, proud of the boy who had learned to believe.
Every time Max stepped onto the field after that, he remembered the lightning goldfish and the truth they'd discovered together: magic sparks courage, but believing makes it last.
