The Lightning Goldfish
Lily was lonely. She had just moved to a new town and didn't know anyone at school. Her room felt empty, except for the small glass bowl on her nightstand where Finnegan, her orange goldfish, swam in sleepy circles.
One night, a terrible storm rolled in. Lightning flashed across the sky like bright silver ribbons. Thunder rumbled so loudly the windows shook. Lily peeked at Finnegan's bowl and gasped.
Every time lightning struck, Finnegan GLOWED. Not just reflected light — he actually shimmered like a tiny underwater star!
"Hello, friend," a bubbly voice said.
Lily rubbed her eyes. "Who said that?"
"I did!" The little goldfish swam to the surface. "I'm Finnegan, and you've been a wonderful friend to me. Feeding me every morning, talking to me when you're sad. Tonight, I can grant you one wish."
Lily's heart raced faster than the rain outside. "I wish I had a real friend. Someone to play with."
Finnegan's scales flashed brighter than ever. "Close your eyes!"
A bolt of lightning crashed. The room filled with magical golden light. When Lily opened her eyes, a girl stood there — Molly, the new girl from her class who sat alone at lunch too, dripping wet but smiling.
"I was walking by and saw your light," Molly said shyly. "Can I come in until the storm passes?"
The girls spent the whole storm playing games, telling stories, and watching Finnegan glow. When morning came, the storm was gone, but something wonderful had appeared — friendship, bright and real as any lightning bolt.
Lily learned that sometimes, the best friends arrive when you least expect them, and magic comes in many forms — even in a small orange fish who knows that being a good friend means helping others find friendship too.
