The Lightning Goldfish

Maya had the wildest hair in her whole class. It bounced around her face like springs whenever she laughed, which was almost all the time. But today, Maya wasn't laughing.

Her pet goldfish, Goldie, floated at the top of his bowl, not moving at all. Mom said Goldie was sleeping, but Maya knew something was wrong. Goldie looked like a tiny zombie fish—still and silent, with his golden scales barely shimmering.

Maya sat by Goldie's bowl as thunder rumbled outside. She loved Goldie more than anything. Every day after school, she'd tell him stories about her day, and he would swim around happily, listening with his big fish eyes.

"Please wake up, Goldie," she whispered, tapping gently on the glass.

Suddenly—CRACK! Lightning flashed right outside Maya's window, so bright it turned everything purple-white for one magical second.

In that flash of light, Maya saw something amazing. Goldie's scales began to glow with a soft, golden light. The sleepy zombie fish started to swim again! But he wasn't just swimming normally. Goldie was dancing in the water, leaving trails of sparkles behind him.

Maya gasped. The lightning had done something magical!

Goldie swam to the front of his bowl and looked right at Maya. She could almost hear him say: "I was never sleeping, Maya. I was just waiting for the right moment to show you my special magic."

From that day on, Maya noticed that whenever lightning flashed during a storm, Goldie would glow and dance. And somehow, whenever Maya felt sad or lonely, Goldie would sense it and do a funny little flip that always made her smile.

Maya learned something important that day: sometimes, things aren't what they seem. Goldie wasn't a zombie fish at all—he was magical, just waiting for the perfect moment to share his secret.

And the best part? Maya's wild hair seemed to sparkle just a little bit whenever Goldie glowed, like they were both magic together.
