The Lightning Goldfish
Mia stood at the edge of the swimming pool, her toes curled tight against the concrete. The water looked dark and mysterious under the cloudy sky. All the other children had gone inside because of the storm gathering overhead, but Mia remained, fascinated by the ripples that danced across the surface.
A flash of lightning split the sky, brilliant and jagged like nature's own fireworks. Most children would run from such a sight, but Mia watched in wonder. She loved storms—they felt like magic was happening right above her head.
Suddenly, something caught her eye in the pool. A tiny glowing shape, bright orange like the little tangerines her grandmother put in her lunchbox, darted through the water. It wasn't scary. It was beautiful.
Another flash of lightning illuminated the whole pool, and Mia gasped. The orange shape was a tiny fish, but not like any fish she'd ever seen. Its scales shimmered like captured starlight, and it swam in playful circles, leaving trails of glowing bubbles behind it.
"Hello there," Mia whispered, leaning closer.
The fish seemed to hear her. It swam right to the edge where she stood and popped its head above the surface just a little. Its eyes were kind and curious.
"Are you lonely?" Mia asked. The fish nodded—actually nodded!—and splashed happily.
Mia realized the little fish needed a friend. More importantly, she realized something about herself: she wasn't afraid of the water anymore. The fish made it seem friendly and magical.
She climbed down the pool ladder slowly, her heart beating fast but not with fear—with excitement. The orange fish swam beside her, guiding her deeper. Mia discovered she could swim! The fish's light made everything clear and beautiful underwater, even as the storm rained silver drops upon the surface above them.
They played together until the storm passed and the sky cleared. As the fish faded back into the depths, Mia understood the real magic: sometimes the things that scare us most—like storms, or trying something new—can lead to the most wonderful adventures. She had made an extraordinary friend and discovered she was braver than she ever imagined.
The next time Mia saw lightning, she didn't feel scared at all. She just smiled and thought of her glowing orange friend who had taught her that courage comes in the most unexpected packages.
