The Lightning Goldfish
Maya's goldfish Finn swam in circles in his glass bowl on the windowsill. He was the smallest goldfish in the whole pet store, with scales the color of sunset and fins like transparent ribbons.
"I wish I could see the world," Finn would whisper to himself, watching Maya do her homework.
One hot summer afternoon, the sky turned dark purple. Thunder rumbled like a giant tummy. The first bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, turning everything bright white.
CRACK! A bolt struck right outside Maya's window!
But something magical happened. Instead of scaring Finn, the lightning made his scales glow like tiny stars. When the light faded, Finn could float in the air like a bubble!
"Finn!" Maya gasped. "You're flying!"
"I want to see the world!" Finn bubbled excitedly.
Maya carried Finn outside in a special traveling bowl. They reached a beautiful park with swaying palm trees and fountains that sparkled in the returning sunlight.
Finn's eyes grew wide. A real pond! And there, swimming among the lily pads, were other fish — but also frogs, dragonflies, and even a small turtle.
"Welcome!" called a green frog. "I'm Hoppy. This is the best pond ever."
Finn made so many friends. He learned to catch flies (well, just one), and Hoppy taught him how to leap over lily pads. But the best part was sharing stories.
"In my bowl, I can only swim in circles," Finn said sadly. "You have the whole world."
Hoppy patted Finn's fin with a webbed foot. "But you have something special. You have Maya, and she loves you. That's better than any pond."
That night, Finn swam back into his bowl. He still explored the pond every day, but he was always home for dinner with Maya.
And sometimes, when storms came, Finn's scales would glow just a little bit — reminding him that magic lives everywhere, even in a small fish bowl, especially when you have friends who love you.
