The Lightning Goldfish

Maya's curly hair always tangled when she got excited, and tonight it was a wild copper cloud around her face. She sat by her window, watching the storm outside. Lightning flashed across the sky like nature's fireworks.

Downstairs, her little brother Leo was crying. His goldfish, Sparkle, had stopped swimming and lay floating at the top of her bowl. "Make her better," Leo begged Maya through tears. "You can do magic, I know you can."

Maya didn't have magic—or so she thought. But as another bolt of lightning cracked the sky, something strange happened. A drop of rainwater splashed onto Sparkle's bowl just as lightning flashed outside. The water glowed!

Maya's hair stood on end with static. She reached toward the bowl, and her fingertips tingled. The glow spread through Sparkle's tiny body. The goldfish flipped over and darted around her bowl so fast she became a blur of orange light.

Sparkle could swim through AIR now! She leaped from her bowl and swam around Maya's room like a tiny orange comet, leaving trails of glittering water drops that turned into papaya flowers when they landed.

"But where will Sparkle live?" Maya asked. "She can't stay in a bowl anymore."

That night, Sparkle led Maya and Leo through the rainy garden to the old papaya tree behind their house. Lightning struck its trunk, and the tree hollowed out into a magical pool filled with glowing water. Sparkle swam in graceful circles, and with each loop, papaya flowers bloomed instantly along the branches.

"Thank you," Sparkle seemed to say, bubbling happily.

Leo hugged Maya tight. "Your hair looked like lightning when you saved her. It was beautiful."

Maya touched her curls, now messy and tangled from the storm adventure. She smiled. Sometimes the best magic comes from caring about someone else's happiness more than your own.
