The Lightning Goldfish

Lily pressed her nose against the glass bowl, watching her pet goldfish Goldie swim in lazy circles. The room was dark, except for the blue glow of her iPhone on the nightstand.

CRACK! Lightning flashed outside, making the whole room bright white. Thunder rumbled like a giant tummy growling. Goldie darted to the bottom of his bowl, his orange scales shining.

"It's okay, Goldie," Lily whispered, dipping her fingers into the cool water. "Just a storm."

But then something magical happened. A tiny bolt of lightning zapped through the window and—ZING!—right into Goldie's bowl!

Goldie began to GLOW. His fins shimmered like tiny stars. He swam up, up, UP until his face was right at the water's surface.

"Lily!" Goldie said in a bubbly voice. "I can talk now! The lightning gave me magic!"

Lily's eyes grew wide as dinner plates. "You can TALK?"

"Yes! And look!" Goldie wiggled his fins. "I can make wishes come true. But only for true friends."

Lily's heart leaped. She grabbed her iPhone and showed Goldie her grandma's contact number. "I miss Grandma. She lives so far away. Can you help me see her?"

Goldie swam in a sparkly spiral. Water droplets rose from his bowl and swirled around the room like tiny diamonds. The iPhone screen flickered and suddenly—GRANDMA'S FACE appeared!

"Lily Bear!" Grandma waved through the screen, her voice crackling like happy radio static. "How's my favorite girl?"

They talked for hours, Goldie's magic keeping the connection strong. Grandma told stories, Lily showed her drawings, and Goldie did silly swim tricks that made everyone laugh.

As dawn approached, Goldie's glow began to fade. "My magic is sleeping now," he yawned, sinking to the bottom of his bowl. "But I'll always be your friend, Lily. True friendship is the real magic."

Lily kissed her fingers and touched them to the glass. Goldie blew a tiny bubble that popped with a sparkly *ping.*

Outside, the rain stopped. A rainbow stretched across the sky. Lily curled up with her goldfish and her iPhone, feeling warm and happy inside.

Sometimes the best adventures come from the most unexpected places—even from a lightning bolt and a little orange fish.
