The Lightning Goldfish

Emma's goldfish, Goldie, wasn't ordinary. While other goldfish swam in circles, Goldie swam in lightning bolts — quick, jumpy zigs and zags that made Emma giggle every time she watched him.

One stormy evening, Emma built a pyramid of sand in her backyard, just as the sky turned purple. Lightning flashed across the clouds like giant cracks in a dark eggshell.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck Emma's sand pyramid!

Goldie's fishbowl rattled. Goldie jumped right out of the water and landed in Emma's palm, his scales shimmering with the same glow as the lightning that had just struck.

"Emma!" Goldie spoke, his voice tiny and tinkly. "The Lightning Pyramid opened! It only happens once every hundred years!"

Emma's eyes grew as round as marbles. "You can TALK?"

"I'm not just any goldfish," Goldie said. "I'm the keeper of the Lightning Pyramid's magic. But something's wrong. The magic's leaking! If we don't catch it before the storm ends, all the lightning in the world will disappear forever!"

Emma gasped. "No more lightning? But then how would storms be exciting?"

"Exactly!" Goldie wriggled in her palm. "You must carry me to the old palm tree at the edge of town. That's where the Lightning Pyramid's magic lives.Quick — before the rain stops!"

Emma grabbed her raincoat and ran, Goldie safely cupped in her palm. Raindrops spattered around them like tiny liquid jewels. Lightning flashed, and each time it did, Goldie glowed brighter.

The palm tree swayed in the wind, its fronds dancing like green fingers beckoning them closer. Emma could feel magic humming in the air, like a song she could almost hear.

"Place me in the palm tree's hollow," Goldie whispered. "Quickly!"

Emma reached up and gently placed Goldie inside a small opening in the palm tree's trunk. Goldie's scales flashed so bright that Emma had to squint.

A beam of golden light shot up from the palm tree, weaving through the storm clouds, repairing the lightning. The storm's thunder rumbled softly, like a satisfied purr.

Goldie floated back down and landed in Emma's palm again, now just a regular goldfish.

"Thank you, Emma," he bubbled.

Emma smiled and hugged her fishy friend close. "Anytime, Goldie. Anytime."

That night, Emma fell asleep dreaming of lightning, pyramids, and goldfish who save the world — one lightning bolt at a time.
