The Lightning Goldfish
Leo sat by his fishbowl, watching Glimmer swim in lazy circles. The little goldfish with shimmering orange scales was his only friend since they moved to the new house. Mom said he'd make new friends at school, but Leo was too shy.
One rainy afternoon, lightning flashed across the sky. BOOM! Thunder shook the windows. Suddenly, Glimmer began to glow—first pink, then blue, then brilliant golden light!
"Leo," whispered a tiny voice. Leo looked around. No one was there.
"Down here!" Glimmer's fins sparkled as she spoke. "I can grant you one wish, but only during a lightning storm! Quick, before it ends!"
Leo's eyes widened. "I wish for a friend who likes adventures!"
"Then start running!" Glimmer cried. "Follow the lightning!"
Leo grabbed his raincoat and dashed outside into the rain. Another bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree at the park. He ran toward it, splashing through puddles.
Under the tree stood a girl his age, holding an umbrella shaped like a big yellow mushroom. She was watching the storm with wide, excited eyes.
"Hi!" Leo panted. "I'm Leo. Do you like adventures?"
"I LOVE adventures!" she grinned. "I'm Maya. Want to see something magical?"
She pointed at the puddle between them. Lightning flashed again, and for one magical moment, the water reflected two sets of stars—the real ones above and their own reflections below, dancing together like old friends.
"See?" Maya laughed. "The sky comes down to play during storms!"
They spent the whole storm running from puddle to puddle, making up stories about cloud kingdoms and thunder giants. When the rain stopped, Glimmer's magic faded, but something better remained.
"See you tomorrow?" Maya asked.
"Every tomorrow," Leo promised.
That night, Leo whispered to Glimmer, "Thank you."
The goldfish winked—a tiny, golden sparkle in her eye. Some friendships are written in the stars, but the best ones start with running through the rain, chasing lightning, and being brave enough to say hello.
