The Lightning Goldfish
Emma's goldfish, Splash, lived in a small glass bowl on her nightstand. He was an ordinary orange fish—or so she thought. Every evening, Emma would tap on the glass and Splash would dance tiny bubbles in response.
One hot July afternoon, dark clouds gathered above Emma's backyard pool. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. Emma rushed outside to cover the pool before the storm hit, clutching her iPhone to snap pictures of the dramatic sky.
CRACK! Lightning struck the pool with a blinding flash, turning the water into a shimmering, silver mirror for just one second. But in that moment, Emma saw something impossible—her goldfish Splash was swimming in the pool!
She rubbed her eyes. But when she looked again at her phone's screen, which had captured the moment in a photo, there he was—glowing with an inner golden light.
"Splash?" she whispered.
The fish swam to the surface and spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "The lightning granted me a wish, Emma. One hour to swim free in a real ocean. Well, a pool ocean."
Emma laughed, dipping her toes into the warm water. "But this is just a pool."
"To you," Splash twinkled. "But imagination turns pools into oceans, storms into adventures, and goldfish into explorers."
For the next hour, they played together—Splash racing raindrops on the surface, Emma making waves for him to surf. She didn't touch her iPhone once. The real magic was right in front of her.
When the hour ended, Splash glowed brighter one last time. "Thank you, Emma. The best adventures are shared with friends."
Emma gently returned him to his bowl. That night, as storm clouds drifted away, she whispered, "Goodnight, my magical friend." And somewhere under the stars, a small orange fish dreamed of oceans.
